ToolJet vs Retool

Open source. Self-hosted. Built by the agent you already use.

Retool is proprietary, bills every end user, and keeps SSO and Git sync on Enterprise. ToolJet is open source, self-hosts from the free tier, and lets the coding agent you already use build the app.

The short version
  1. Our agent builds it, or yours does

ToolJet AI is built in with no setup and runs on GPT, Claude, Gemini or Grok. Or let Claude Code or Codex compose the app over an MIT-licensed MCP server with no ToolJet credits. Retool's one build tool relays your prompt to Retool AI and bills credits for it.

  2. Self-host from the free tier

The Community Edition runs on Docker, Kubernetes or air-gapped on Free, Team and Enterprise. Retool self-hosts on paid tiers, with the advanced options on Enterprise.

  3. SSO, audit logs and Git sync on Team

$199 per builder with end users included up to 100. Retool needs Enterprise for SSO and Git sync, Business for audit logs, and bills every end user on every plan.

Coding agents

Who builds the app, and who pays for it

Both platforms ship an MCP server and both list Claude Code and Codex as clients. The difference is what the agent is allowed to do once it connects.

RetoolRelay, or bring React

One build tool, and it isn't your agent.

  • create_or_append_react_app_thread_message forwards your prompt to Retool AI, which generates a React app.
  • You pay your agent's tokens to relay the prompt, then Retool AI credits to do the build.
  • Or write React locally and import it: no credits, but now you maintain a React codebase inside Retool.
ToolJetOurs, or yours

Our agent, or the one you already use.

  • ToolJet AI is built in, needs no setup, and runs on GPT, Claude, Gemini or Grok, your choice.
  • Or connect Claude Code, Codex or any MCP client over the MIT-licensed MCP server: around 50 tools, no ToolJet credits, cloud or self-hosted.
  • Either way the result is a native app, no generated code, that you can inspect and edit in the visual builder.

Self-hosting

Your infrastructure, without the enterprise premium

Retool offers self-hosted deployments on paid tiers at cloud prices, keeps the advanced options for Enterprise, and still bills every end user.

RetoolPaid tiers, per end user

Self-hosted, but still per seat.

  • Available on paid plans only.
  • Every builder and every end user is billed.
  • Unlimited users, SSO and advanced self-host features need an Enterprise contract.

  • Docker, Kubernetes, AWS, Azure, GCP, on-premise or air-gapped.
  • The Community Edition is free to self-host; Team and Enterprise add governance.
  • End users included up to the plan limit, not billed per head.

Questions people ask

ToolJet vs Retool, answered

Is ToolJet enterprise-ready, and who uses it?

Yes. ToolJet runs in production at Tencent, Swisscom, Duolingo, Gojek, Orange, Unity, ClearScore, Bandwidth, Toss, Endeavour Group, ShareChat and YMCA NYC, among others. It is SOC 2, ISO 27001 and GDPR compliant. The Team plan includes SSO with SAML, OpenID Connect and LDAP, audit logs, Git sync, custom user groups and white labelling; Enterprise adds SCIM provisioning, multi-environment, custom data retention, air-gapped deployment and a dedicated support manager.

Is ToolJet a Retool alternative that I can self-host for free?

Yes. ToolJet's Community Edition is open source under AGPL-3.0 and can be self-hosted on Docker, Kubernetes, AWS, Azure, GCP, DigitalOcean, OpenShift or air-gapped, on the Free, Team and Enterprise plans. Retool offers self-hosting on its paid tiers, with unlimited users, SSO and advanced self-hosted features reserved for Enterprise.

Does ToolJet charge per end user like Retool?

No. Retool bills per builder and per end user on every plan, $50 and $15 a month respectively on Business. ToolJet charges per builder and includes end users up to the plan limit: 50 on Free and Pro, 100 on Team, unlimited on Enterprise.

Can Claude Code or Codex build ToolJet apps?

Yes. ToolJet ships an MIT-licensed MCP server, packaged as Claude Code and Codex plugins and usable from VS Code, Copilot or any MCP client, against cloud or self-hosted instances. It exposes around 50 tools for pages, queries, components, events and tables. The agent composes the app directly and verifies it in a browser. No application code is generated, no ToolJet credits are consumed, and the result stays editable in the visual builder.

How is that different from Retool's MCP server?

Retool's MCP server, in public beta since May 2026, has more than thirty tools for administration, resources and queries, but only one builds apps: it forwards your prompt to Retool's own AI, which generates a React app and consumes Retool AI credits on top of your agent's tokens. The other route is to write a React app locally with your agent and import it through the MCP, which avoids the credits but means you own and maintain React code. With ToolJet the agent builds a native app itself, so there are no credits and no codebase.

Can I use my own OpenAI or Anthropic key?

On both platforms, bring-your-own-key is an Enterprise feature. Retool does not charge credits for BYOK usage. ToolJet Enterprise supports Anthropic, Google Gemini, Grok and OpenRouter keys, does not consume credits when one is configured, and additionally offers ToolJet AI Enterprise, an AI server image that runs inside your own infrastructure so no request reaches ToolJet at all.

Which plan do I need for SSO, audit logs and Git sync?

On ToolJet all three are included on the Team plan at $199 per builder per month, with SAML, OpenID Connect, LDAP, Google and GitHub SSO. On Retool, SSO/SAML and source control require Enterprise, and audit logs require Business.

Can I migrate my Retool apps to ToolJet?

There is no automatic importer for Retool exports. The practical path is to point a coding agent at your Retool app definition and have it rebuild the app in ToolJet through the MCP server, which handles the pages, queries and events. ToolJet also offers migration consultations for larger estates.

What does ToolJet's AI cost if I don't use a coding agent?

In-product AI uses ToolJet credits: 100 on Free, 2,000 on Starter and Pro, 3,000 per builder on Team, with pay-as-you-go top-ups on paid plans. Builds driven through the MCP server from your own Claude or Codex subscription consume no ToolJet credits.
